PhD Playlist – Sam Warner

Here we are already opening the curtains to another sunny Friday morning, so here is the next instalment in the PhD playlist series.

Each week we shine the spotlight on a student at the Norwich Research Park and ask them to share three songs in a desert island disc-style game; one song that captures their project (expect some very tenuous links), one song that captures their life as a PhD student and a final motivational song because – let’s face it – we all need it.

This week we have the wonderful Sam Warner, a fellow Streptomyces convert and lover of all things green. He’s been kind enough to share his selection with us on Good Friday.

Have a peaceful and cheerful Easter weekend everyone x

Sam coverHi, I’m Science-loving Sam and I’ll be your DJ for the night. So, sit back, relax and get wavy. I’m a first-year rotation student trying and testing as much as I can on the JIC site because JIC is a candy shop and I’m an indecisive child with a sweet tooth. To summarise my research to date, as it relates to my personality, I’ve been Starchy Sam in the Seung group, Streptomyces Sam in the Truman group and I’m now Seasonally responsive Sam in the Penfield group.

The Project Song – I Still Haven’t Found What I’m Looking For, U2

So, I’ve chosen this as my project song for two reasons. Firstly, because being a first-year rotation student can feel like you’re on a perennial pursuit for that perfect project. Secondly, because every project I’ve ever been on, the data only drips in the day I depart. So, whilst I have a pretty solid idea where I’ll end up and I’m sure I’ll finally get on a project that gets results whilst I’m there, ‘I Still Haven’t Found What I’m Looking For’.

The PhD Life Song – When the Going Gets Tough, The Tough Get Going,  Billy Ocean

(I know the motivational song is supposed to come next) but as a die-hard Billy Ocean fan this is the (positive) song for my PhD experience so far. It reminds me to keep at something when it seems hard and to ‘climb any mountain…cross any river’.

The Motivational Song – Take It Easy, The Eagles

Maybe this isn’t the song to listen to if you have yet another PCR to run at 3am. But I do think it’s the song to listen to when you keep finding yourself running PCR’s at 3am. I learned this the hard way, but I cannot function and neither can my experiments when I haven’t looked after myself properly. So, work hard, but when work is just that little bit too hard, ‘Take It Easy!’

Head over to Spotify to step into the archives of the PhD playlist and discover some proper bops to get you motivated for a day at the desk (….or elsewhere). Thanks to Sam for adding some good old classic bangers to the list.

The PhD playlist is the brainchild of Millie Stanton (follow her on twitter @milliestanton for some sweet science and music masterpieces) and has been continued by Melissa Davie (follow me @melissajd_ for very irregular retweets of cute dogs and natural products science).
